Facts and Events
1850 Census Dist 39, Monroe, Virginia 1860 Census Dist 1, Greenbrier Co., Virginia NOTE: There is a possibility that James' wife was Elizabeth M. Hogshead as per the Monroe County History. James' father Alex was living in 1860 next hh to the family of Mary Polly Hogshead which includes the children mentioned in the Monroe Co. History. LATER: The birth record of her daughter Joanna shows the mother's name as Elizabeth M. Jackson so this verifies her name as Elizabeth Margaret which would agree with the Monroe County History. And now the 1850 census record has been found which verifies her name as Elizabeth M. Hogshead. On the 1900 Census (Lewisburg, Greenbrier) Elizabeth says she had had 6 children and 2 are still living. A photo of her gravemarker is on her Find-a-Grave memorial page. The inscription is "E. Margaret, wife of Jas. W. Jackson" so there is no indication on the marker of her last name. The author of the memorial page has said her name was Elizabeth Margaret McGlamery Hogsett Jackson. I don't know where the name McGlamery came from. She would have been about 19 years old when she married James so it is doubful that she was previously married to a McGlamery. I don't know if later descendants changed the spelling from Hogshead to Hogsett or not, but perhaps. At the time her death record was recorded, the Registrar spelled it Hogsett, said her parents were J. & P. Hogsett but said the informant was her husband J. W. Hogsett. Of course, that should have been her husband J. W. Jackson. Her father, John Hogshead had been deceased many years. So we have a less than exacting Registrar, who may have given her own interpretation of the spelling. Her son, Mathew's 1919 death certificate says Mathew's mother was Margaret Hogsett! References
