Childhood

Eliza Hickinbottom was baptised on 17th December 1815 at Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire, daughter of a lace maker named Susannah Hickinbottom, formerly Perry, and her husband James Hickinbottom, a labourer. Eliza was the couple's second child. Less than three months after Eliza's baptism her father James died, followed a few months later by Eliza's older sister.

In 1818, when Eliza was two years old, her mother married again, with an ironmonger's labourer named Samuel Rowe becoming Eliza's stepfather. Eliza had seven half-siblings from her mother's second marriage, although four of them died as children.

Adulthood

In 1836, aged 20, Eliza married a labourer named John Linney. Between 1838 and 1858 they had seven children at Leighton Buzzard or neighbouring Linslade, including twin daughters in 1844. The 1841 census finds Eliza living with John and their children and in the same household as John's sister's family.

Some time between 1844 and 1850 the family moved across the river from Leighton Buzzard to Bossington Lane in Linslade, where they had a son named Samuel in 1850. The 1851 census finds John, Eliza and their children living at Linslade Road in Linslade. John was working as a farm labourer. Some time between 1854 and 1858 they returned to Leighton Buzzard, where their youngest child was born.

The 1861 census finds the family living at Parrotts Piece to the north-west of Leighton Buzzard town centre. At this time Eliza was described as a plaiter. Six of their seven children were still at home. The one who wasn't was their daughter Rachel Ellen, who had gone to live in Luton, probably using the branch railway line which had just opened from Leighton Buzzard to Dunstable and Luton. Rachel was married in Luton shortly after the 1861 census, and Eliza became a grandmother at the age of 45 when Rachel's first child was born later that year. Eliza's mother died in 1864.

The 1871 census finds John and Eliza were living at Parrotts Piece, along with five of their children. They also had two young grandchildren living with them, both of whom appear to have been their daughter Susannah's children. Their daughter Rachel by this time had five children, mostly born in Luton but one, Sarah, born in Leighton Buzzard in 1865, suggesting Rachel stayed in touch with her family in Leighton Buzzard. Their son George had married in 1864 and was still living in Leighton Buzzard with his wife and step-children at the time of the 1871 census, but does not appear to have had any children of his own.

John died later in 1871, aged 56.

Four years later, on 9th August 1875 and aged 59, Eliza married again. Her second husband was a shepherd named George Biley. The 1881 census finds them living together at Hockliffe Road in Leighton Buzzard. George died later that year.

Having lived almost her whole life in Leighton Buzzard, Eliza appears to have moved to Luton some time between 1881 and 1890. By this time most of her children had moved to Luton; presumably she had moved to be nearer them. She died at 17 Upper Chobham Street in Luton on 10th April 1890, aged 74. Her daughter Rachel was informant for her death.
