MARRIED: 1798 -- A marriage between Elizabeth Bowles, daughter of ThomasBowles, and ___ Mordak was recorded in the Orange County Marriage Book. Ithink this was a late recording of the marriage of James and Elizabethbut it could have been a daughter of Thomas Bowles, Jr. LEGAL: 1761 -- The Little River Presbyterian Church was organized andJames William Murdock and wife Elizabeth were among the charter members. LEGAL: 1778 -- November 21, James and his wife, Elizabeth, deeded 120acres on the South side of the Little River to their son, John, for Ð120(pounds sterling). This land was a part of their original land grant(Orange County, NC Deed Book 2, page 8). LEGAL: 1778 -- In the November Court of Common Pleas, the deed to Johnfrom James and Elizabeth was proved in court. This means that Elizabethhad to appear before the Clerk of Court and in private, state that shehad signed the deed willingly and without force from her husband. LEGAL: 1802 -- December 28, Elizabeth Murdock deeded 177 acres on theNorth Fork of the Little River to her son, William, for Ð177 (OrangeCounty, NC Deed Book 12, page 316). WILL: 1814 -- Elizabeth, widow of James William Murdock, died. In herwill she left the house and lands to her daughter Ann and Ann's son,David. If Ann should marry or die, the house and lands were to go toDavid and he was to pay $50 to John, son of James, Jr., and to give a cowto Robert, son of John who died in 1781. She left 5 shillings each toCathy, Mary, James and William. She left her bed furniture to Mary, hermare to Ann, a stripen stuff gown to Elizabeth, daughter of James, Jr.,and a stripen habit to Elizabeth Riggs, daughter of John who died in 1781(Orange County, NC Will Book D, page 399). NAMING: The Bowles' family was often known as Boules or Boult. |
