Identity

The American Genealogist (40:238-239, 1964) makes a compelling argument that the William Freathy's wife is NOT Elizabeth Barker, because the William Freethy found in the marriage records of Plymouth, England (13 Jan 1639, William ffreathie and Elizabeth Barker), who then has a son Ric. ffreathie baptised 28 July 1641, cannot at the same time be living in New England, working as an apprentice to Mr. Winter, and later found in the court records being sued in New Hampshire in 1641. Robert Charles Anderson's Great Migration Begins (Vol II C-F, p. 583-587, see discussion of this issue on p. 587) agrees with this assessment, and notes Elizabeth's maiden name remains unknown.

Legal

Anderson reports (from the Maine Provincial and Court Records 2:103, 373) that on 1 July 1671, "'Elizabeth Freathy the wife of William Freathy' was convicted for 'defaming Mrs. Rishworth & inordinate drinking' and was fined 30s., 'which her husband refusing or neglecting to pay...the said Freathy's wife is to be punished by fifteen stripes'"S1
