Facts and Events
"She came from a wealthy family. Her father was Danish and her mother was German. At 14 she married Caleb Perry Wray. Caleb left his pregnant wife soon after their marriage and sailed around the horn to the gold fields of California. A couple of years later, she followed him, taking a ship to Panama and crossing to the Pacific side carrying her child all the way. She caught a ship to San Francisco and five days before arriving in port her son died. He was buried in San Lorenzo, Alameda County, California. Caleb never saw his first child alive. Family legend has it that many of the weeping willows found in San Lorenzo came from several slips she carried with her from Michigan. In 1863 she returned to Niles, Michigan with her husband and small children by ship, again crossing over in Panama. On Christmas Eve she died at an age of 34 from consumption (tuberculosis) brought on, according to legend, by the smoke from large forest fires of the previous year."S2 References
