DIED – Deacon Elias Smith. Nov. 20th, 1878, aged 53 years, 5 months, and 2

days.

Mr. Smith was born in Wayne county, Ohio, June 18th, 1895, and was the

oldest son of Moses Smith. He was married in Wayne county, Ohio, on the 24th day of January, 1847, to Miss Nancy Merriman. Emigrated to Whitley county, Indiana, October, 22d, 1848. Was converted, and with his wife was baptized into the fellowship of the Washington Township Baptist Church in February, 1856, by the Rev. Collins, of which church he remained a worthy member till the day of his death. Always at his post and ever-giving wise counsel, he was consequently a “strong pillar” in the church. He was ordained as a deacon June 5th, 1876, since which time he served the church devotedly in that capacity.

As a citizen he was respected by all who knew him. As a husband and father

he was kind and affectionate. He leaves a wife, six sons and two daughters, a bereaved church, and many relatives and friends to mourn his departure; yet we sorrow not as those who have no hope, for while his place in the church on earth is made vacant, he fills a more exalted station among the redeemed in glory. His mortal remains were taken to the house of worship on the 22d of November, 1878, when an appropriate sermon was preached by Rev. W. A. Hitchcock, a former pastor of the church, from Revelation, 7th chapter 13th verse, assisted by the Rev. S. Goodin, present pastor. S.G. (Wayne county Ohio papers please copy.)
