Elias was a farmer before his service in the Civil War. He served in Company I of the 209th regiment of the Pennsylvania volunteers from Aug. 29, 1864, to May 31, 1865 under General Meade as a private and corporal. Some time after his military service he became a carpenter. In 1896, about a year after the death of his wife, he moved to the North Bend, Neb., area where his surviving children resided. His grave marker bears the emblem of the "G.A.R."
