Eleanor grew up in Hingham, MA. She attended school at Thayerlands and Thayer Academy in Braintree, MA. She completed a four year degree in Sociology at Randolph Macon Women’s College. She taught preschool for 3 years prior to marriage. She was a full time homemaker until about 1970 when she went to work at Neil Scholl’s stationery store in Randolph, MA. In addition to that she earned the family’s vacation money by sewing Autotherms, a creation of C. Lloyd Claff, that were sold to local hospitals. In 1985 she moved her mother into the home and cared for her till her passing in 1990. She enjoyed excellent health until the fall of 2017 and struggled valiantly to overcome COPD and congestive heart failure which finally beat her 9 months later.

While attending Thayerlands at the age of 9 she met Chester E. Claff, Jr. and they went all the way through school together. They dated through college and during Chet’s time in WWII in occupied Japan. They married on 24 May 1952. Chet had to ask for her hand more than once. They quickly had two children in 1954 and 1956 when they moved into a quiet suburban home in Brockton. Chet passed away in 2012 just three months shy of their 60th anniversary and after 56 years in the same home. In 2018 the home was sold to the daughter of the next door neighbor who they had watched grow up by connecting back yards, and who had children the same genders and ages as the two children in 1956. Eleanor would have smiled at this.
