From the Preble County History, 1981, Toney Family: "Originally the Toneys were Vikings from Norway (about 200 miles N of Oslo). About 990 AD a settlement was founded by Toneys in Normandy, France, and for several generations the Toneys resided in England. The first entry in the Dunster Church Parish shows a John Toney, son of William, who was indentured to David Williamson, a wealthy Virginian planter. About 1600, Wm married Ann Bishop, daughter of John Bishop who had left London for America in 1635 on the vessel "Constance." Toney descendants then moved westward from the Virginia frontier as the country grew. Coming to Preble Co in 1800 were Poindexter and Jesse Toney of Virginia, who married sisters Catherine and Eve Lybrook, respectively of Union Co., Indiana, who were their neighbors in Virginia.
