Earl was a dairy farmer for nearly all of his adult life (I seem to recall that he mentioned having worked as a young man on the town road crew.) He was never really very talkative, and in fact his voice was almost like a low growl down in his throat. He worked hard and was active in his community. Although his family had been Roman Catholic, he was married to a Protestant and became an elder and trustee in the Columbian Presbyterian Church of Lafayette. According to his obituary in the Syracuse Herald-Journal he was also a fifty-year member of the LaFayette Grange 1330 and had served as secretary of the LaFayette Milk Producers Cooperative.

According to the family, Earl attended school between the ages of six and ten in Otisco. He moved to LaFayette in 1908 according to the obituary in the Tully Independent.
He failed his physical for World War I (certificate from Local Board No. 3 for the County of Onondaga, State of New York, Baldwinsville, N.Y. - Serial No. 1139 dated 8 August 1917). I once heard him tell that when the army doctor asked him whether he thought his teeth could handle hardtack, he said they'd better, 'cause I just bought them.
He loved dogs, and gave me a puppy for my first birthday (the first of a series of "Queenies" in my life.) He and Ruby McClary were married for well over fifty years. After she died, he simply faded away.
