1. Church Marriage Certificate gives his name as John SO LEE. His family in Arizona used the name, SO LEE. The 1900 Census for Santa Fe recorded him as, "Joe Lee".
2.In early 1920, he went from Phoenix AZ to Hanford CA for treatment of tuberculosis. His brother, L.T. Sue, was a well-known herbalist there. L.T.'s shop at 15 China Alley is now a designated historical site. The 1920 Census for San Francisco (conducted on 15-16 January) lists a Joe Lee, single, born about 1866, and immigrating in 1880, as an "inmate" of the Chinese Hospital. Although the dates are similar to Down's, the "single" status does not match. Otherwise, this person could be Down. Also in 1920, a Joe Lee, married, born about 1868, appears in the King's County Census, but the immigration date of 1904 is not correct for Down.
3. In a letter to Aurelia Gonzales, L.T. Sue, his brother, calls him "Down". Dr.Y.T. Sue, the informant on his death certificate, also gave his name name as, "Down".
4. A 1915 letter from John to "Charlie", invites him to come to China and marry a nice Chinese girl. Letter is in perfect English with graceful penmanship. No record of a brother of Aurelia's named Charlie. Perhaps the letter was to So Lee's son, Carlos?
5. Lucy remembers her grandfather wearing a braid.
6. Immigrated to U.S. 1882. Immigration status in 1900, "Alien". On his Death Certificate (1920), it is stated that he has resided in California for 40 years; perhaps this was intended to mean that he had come to California about 1880?
7 Resided on College St. in Santa Fe, 1900, on "South Side of River".
