Douglas Westfeldt McIlhenny died peacefully in his sleep at home Saturday, March 28, 2009. He was 89 years old. He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Mary Alpaugh McIlhenny. He is survived by his three daughters, ten grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. He was the son of the late Dr. Paul Avery McIlhenny and Louise Westfeldt McIlhenny and was predeceased by his brothers Paul Westfeldt McIlhenny, Gustaf Westfeldt McIlhenny and Edmund McIlhenny and his sister Barbara McIlhenny Nixon. Mr. McIlhenny graduated from Christ School in Arden, North Carolina and attended the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and Tulane University. He was a member of the 122 Squadron of the Louisiana National Guard and proudly served his country during World War II and the Korean conflict. He served as a board member of E. McIlhenny Sons Corporation and was a director emeritus at the time of his death. Mr. McIlhenny was a member of The Boston Club, the New Orleans Country Club and the Biltmore Forest Country Club in Asheville, N.C.
