Dorothy was the last born of three children of Ethel and Victor Paulsen. Her brothers were older (Carl, 15 years older; Richard, 12), so she was almost like an only child. She lived in Ohio until she moved to Arizona with her husband and family, in 1959. She took care of her father while he was ill with Parkinson's Disease, and she also took care of her husband Edwin Reisland, after he was seriously injured when he was hit by a drunk truck driver in 1947. Dorothy and Ed were married at Dorothy's house (17305 Lakewood Heights Blvd, in Lakewood, Ohio) while Edwin was still in a wheelchair. Dorothy worked for Republic Steel Corp. as a clerical worker, before her marriage. In the late 40's and into the 50's Dorothy would make and sell, hard candies at Christmas time. She ran her business from a kitchen downstairs in the basement on Lakewood Heights Blvd. (the house had 3 kitchens).

As remembered by daughter, Cindy, 1999.
