- Sources that mention the second marriage of Japhet Chapin to Dorothy Root limit their description of her to "of Enfield", giving no parents or birth, perhaps only adding that she married second Obadiah Miller. So, most imply, one way or another, that Root was her maiden name (e.g., Hale, House by Jacobus, p. 717, identifies her as "Dorothy (Root) Chapin, widow of Japhet Chapin"). One exception is an article, "Early Cogans English and American" by George E. McCracken, NEHGR, p. 111:248, says Obadiah Miller was her "fourth husband", but offers only the detail that she was the widow of Japhet Chapin, without mentioning the first or second husband implied by this statement, making one wonder if this was a typo? The only source cited by this article describes Obadiah Miller as her second marriage. Given Japhet's birth in 1643 and Obadiah's birth in 1658, one would expect Dorothy was about 50 at the time of her first(?) marriage to Japhet Chapin, so it would not be a surprise to find an earlier marriage.
