Donald L. Winans, 71, passed away Friday, Nov. 14, 2014, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.

He was born on June 2, 1943, in Warren, the son of the late Harley A. Winans and Marian Jones Hanson.

Don was a 1961 graduate of Cortland High School and 1968 graduate of Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. He was co-owner and licensed funeral director of the Shafer-Winans Funeral Home in Cortland for 26 years.

A lifelong active member of the Cortland community, Don served in a variety of leadership roles including Cortland Lions Club, Cortland Chamber of Commerce, Civil Service Commission, Moose Club, Cortland Masonic Lodge #529 and recently served as the Board President for Cortview Village. He was a member of the Ohio Funeral Directors Association, where he served on the board of directors; National Funeral Directors Association, where he served as president of the Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana County Funeral Directors Association and Al Koran Shriners Clown Unit.

Don was a talented drummer; he played in a number of bands. He loved music, especially Delta Blues and Dixieland. He shared his enjoyment of blues and fishing with his lifelong friend, Robert Hoagland.

In recent years, Don found great delight and enjoyment in his grandchildren.

Memories of Donald will be carried on by his wife of 21 years, Janice Winans of Cortland; son, Christopher (Tammie) Winans of Novi, Mich.; daughter, Lynn (Robert Yemm) Winans of Nashville, Tenn.; daughter, Erin (James Johnson) O'Connell of Atlanta, Ga.; son, Adam (Andrea Sanchez) O'Connell of Akron; grandchildren, Jillian (Michael) Beck Tablack, Ellinor Yemm, Theo Yemm, Daniel O'Connell, Drew Johnson; his best friend, Robert Hoagland of Greenville, Miss.; plus numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Family will receive friends from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at McFarland and Son Funeral Home with the Masonic service at 2:45 p.m., and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Kish officiating.

Services of final committal will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Bazetta Township.
