Facts and Events
Dennis Francis Murray was born several months after his father, Dennis, died. He was never called by his given name. He was called either Francis, or most often Ike. He was given the name Ike because, according to his niece Betty Smith, he looked Jewish. He had dark hair and coal-black eyes and was very thin. Ike was a pianist and played in a band. Ike couldn't read music, however. He played everything by ear. The other members of his band did not know this. They would put music in front of him which he couldn't read, so he asked the band members to hum the tune for him and then he was able to play. He wrote, directed, and acted in a musical which included the song "I'm Looking Over a Four-Leaf Clover," which he also wrote. I'm looking over a four leaf clover That I over-looked before. One leaf is sunshine, the second is rain, Third is the roses that grow in the lane. No need explaining the one remaining Is somebody I adore. I'm looking over a four leaf clover That I over-looked before! References
