Mary Kane was born on May 15, 1856, perhaps in County Cork, Ireland. Betty Murray Smith recalls her ancestors being from Cork. Mary was the daughter of John and Margaret Kane, according to her death certificate, but no records have been found with any of them together.

Mary married Dennis Murray in February 1882 at St. James' Church in Sewickely, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.

Mary lived with her husband and children on a farm in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, beyond Sewickley. Mary's husband, Dennis died in 1893.

According to Betty Murray Smith, after her husband's death, she moved to the lower part of the North Side of Pittsburgh (then Allegheny City). This was formerly an area where the very wealthy of Pittsburgh had lived. She had a beautiful big, old house which she probably rented. The windows went almost to the floor and the woodwork was out of this world. In order to earn money to keep her children, she rented out the rooms of this house to lodgers. One of these lodgers was an elderly gentleman. The girls did household chores for him. She also rented to another older man who was a captain on a riverboat. Her daughter, Marg, eventually married this captain, David McDonald. She was a lot younger than him.

In the 1920 census, Mary is living at 1245 Western Avenue with her daughter, Cecilia, and her husband, Alfred Dailey, and their son Alfred, Jr. The census says that Mary's parents both spoke Irish rather than English, but this can not be confirmed. It is likely that Mary did not answer the census questions herself since both her year of immigration and naturalization are "unknown" and her age is given age is given as 61 when it should be 63.

Mary contracted influenza in May 1920. She died on December 22, 1922 at the age of 66. The cause of death on her death certificate is chronic endocarditis. At the time of her death she lived at 1207 Liverpool Street in the 21st Ward of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She is buried at North Side Catholic Cemetery.
