John Henderson From wherryfamily.com The first generation of the Wherry family in America was started by David Wherry who was born in North Ireland, or Scotland around 1670. He died in Chester County, Pennsylvania at the age of 72 on July 13, 1743. He married Mary before 1716 in North Ireland and they had three children. James Wherry was born in 1715, sister Ann was born 1716 and brother David was born in 1717. James had five children, the youngest, David born December 8, 1757. David, (the son of David 1) however had 15 children by two wives. His 12th child, Mary, daughter of Margaret Mackey Wherry, was born May 1, 1772 on the Old Homestead in Chester County. The homestead, at its present location, was established in 1746 by the sons of the original David Wherry. [It is still there.] David Wherry, in 1814, suggested that the township in Guernsey County, OH be named Oxford since his relatives came from Oxfordshire, England. David is from the family of David and Mary Wherry who came to PA in 1718. There is no other known mention of where this family originated from, other than they immigrated from North Ireland.
