SURBAUGH—HUTSINPILLER INTERMARRIAGES David Surbaugh was born in Germany in 1757. The name
was originally spelled Zurbach. He came to America with a group of Hessian soldiers. When the U. S. government did not return these “foreigners” to their native country, they adapted themselves to local conditions and became loyal American citizens. David Surbaugh was one of the pioneer settlers in Greenbrier Co. His will shows he accumulated a considerable estate, including a number of slaves. He died in 1823, and is buried at the Old Stone Presbyterian Church in Lewisburg. He married Ann Wiseman of Pa. (1766-1846). She also is buried in Lewisburg. For the next three generations, descendants of David and Ann Surbaugh intermarried with Hutsenpillers. Their son and daughter, Henry and Mary, married Mary and John Hutsenpiller (Nos. 35 and 34). Sabina Elizabeth, daughter of their son, Jacob, married her first cousin, Wm. Henry Hutsenpiller (No. 83). Elizabeth Frances, daughter of their grandson, Wm., (another son of Jacob-Surbaugh), married Geo. Washington Campbell. Her daughters, Hetty Catherine and Willie Ann married brothers, John Thos. and Carl Hutsenpiller (Nos. 194 and 195).
