Little is known about him, other than that he fought in the War of 1812, that by that time he was living in upstate New York, and between 1814 and 1822 he and his family moved westward into Ohio, initially to Wooster Township where his son Reason was born, and subsequently further west. In 1833 he bought land from the US Government in York Township (near Clyde), Sandusky County, Ohio, some of which he later sold or gave to his eldest known son, Andrew Smith, upon the son's marriage. He died of cholera at the age of 68 on the family farm in York Township and was buried in Wickwire Cemetery there. He died intestate, which suggests he was in good health up to that point as other family members were careful to leave wills.
