David Edward Smitty Smith, 83, died Wednesday evening, June 20, 2007, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law in Hanover. He was the husband of Dorothy Louise (Bittle) Smith, his wife of 59 years, who died September 2, 2003.
Born January 7, 1924, in Gardners, he was the son of the late Raymond D. and Daisey M. (Smith) Smith.
Mr. Smith served in the Army during WWII with the 740th Field Artillery Battalion, Battery C. On July 24, 2000, U.S. Congressman Bill Goodling present him with the medals earned for his wartime service: Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-AfricanMiddle Eastern Campaign Medal with four Bronze Service Stars, WWII Victory Medal, Army of Occupational Medal with Germany Clasp, Honorable Service Lapel Button WWII, and Sharpshooter Badge with Carbine Bar. David participated in five battles, including The Battle of the Bulge - the greatest land battle ever fought and won by the U.S. Army - December 16, 1944 to January 25, 1945. His unit traveled through France, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, and Germany. At the end of the war, his unit was under the command of General George S. Patton. On January 6, 2002, he received a diploma from the Republique Francaise for the debarquement in Normandie et de la Liberation 19441945. Mr. Smith retired from Hanover Borough in 1986 after 25 years of service. He was a member of Christ United Church of Christ, Littlestown; a life member of Littlestown V.F.W.; a life member of Littlestown Fish and Game Association; a member of Littlestown Eagles; and a member of Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge of Washington, D.C.
He is survived by a daughter, Linda Conrad and husband, Ken of Hanover, with whom he resided; two stepgrandchildren, Wendy Markle of Hanover and Robbie Conrad and wife, Jessica of Hanover; three step great-grandchildren, Devin and Alexia Conrad and Brayden Bailey, all of Hanover; and one sister, Betty Wolf and husband, Ronald of Gardners.
He was predeceased by two brothers, William and Lloyd Smith; one sister, Esther Graver; two half brothers, Raymond and Ralph Smith; and two grandchildren, Eric Fritz and Noah Miles.
