David Slocum was the son of George and Mary Critzer Slocum. He was one of eight children.
David fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War. He enlisted in the early months of the war at the age of 19. No doubt he was a witness to the many atrocities of war, fighting and surviving until the surrender of Company C, 31st Infantry Regiment Virginia and of Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House, VA in April 1865.
After the war, he married Sarah F. Golden, daughter of James M. and Lucy Cropp Golden, September 20, 1866 in Harrison County, WV. Shortly thereafter, they migrated to Knox County, MO, along with other Harrison County families (i.e. the Goldens, Coffmans, Harrs, etc.) Upon arriving in Missouri, David took up farming. Sarah passed away in 1871. No chidren were known to have been born to this union.
On February 3, 1880, David married again. Mary Francis Greaves Richards was his second wife. Again, no children were born to the couple.
