The children of Dr. David Marchand and his wife, Catherine (Bonnett) Marchand, afore-mentioned, are as follows:
1. Lewis, born August 16, 1804, read medicine with his father and died February 22, 1825, before attaining his majority.
2. John Bonnett, born August 27, 1808, was at the age of fifteen clerk to his father, who was then prothonotary of Westmoreland county. In December, 1828, he entered the United States navy, at Philadelphia, and was promoted to master in 1837. December 15, 1841, he was put in command of the schooner “Van Buren,” and took part in operations against the Seminole Indians in Florida. In 1843-45 he made a cruise of the world in the United States steamship “Brandywine.” In the Mexican war commanded the ship “Ohio” in the battles at Vera Cruz. In the Civil war he commanded the “James Adger,” and was in command of the blockading squadron at Charleston and Georgetown. May 16, 1862, was wounded while in an engagement at the mouth of Stone river. October 24, 1862, was ordered to command the “Lackawanna,” and reported for blockade duty off Mobile, and August 5, 1864, participated in the battle of Mobile Bay. On July 11, 1865, was ordered to the Philadelphia navy yard as executive officer, and July 25, 1866. was promoted to commodore for meritorious services and put in command of the Philadelphia navy yard, being retired August 27, 1870. He died April 13, 1875, at Carlisle, Pennsylvania. At the age of forty-eight he married Margaret Donaldson Thornton, daughter of Paymaster Francis A. Thornton, United States navy. A son, John Thornton Marchand, was admitted to practice at the Westmoreland bar.
3. Albert Gallatin, born February 26, 1811. At an early age he was assistant to his father in the prothonotary’s office. He was admitted to the bar in 1833 and practiced that profession until his death, February 5, 1848. In 1840, as a Democrat. he was sent to congress. being then in his twenty-eighth year, and was re-elected in 1842. He married Susan P. daughter of Jacob Kuhns, issue: William K.. John A.. Kate, and Lizzie.
4. George W., born January 4, 1813, studied and practiced medicine in Leechburg. Pennsylvania, where he died August 8, 1863.
5. Levinia (Mrs. Russel). born January 27, --. had one child, Mrs. Kate Gill. She died March 18, 1880, buried in St. Clair cemetery.
6. David K.. born December 3. 1816. was a printer by trade. In 1841 he became a partner with Joseph Russel in the Westmoreland Republican and Farmers’ Chronicle, of Greensburg, Pennsylvania. in 1844 was sole editor and proprietor, and in 1861 scold out to Andrew Graham. He married, March 18. 1845. Elizabeth, daughter of Jacob Lobingier. His death occurred at Greensburg.
7. Henry Clay, born March 9, 1819, died January 16, 1882. He was admitted to the bar in 1840, became a partner with his brother, Albert G., and this relationship continued until the death of his brother in 1848, after which he practiced alone until the admission to the bar of John A., son of Albert G., in 1864, at which time a partnership was formed which continued until his death, January 16, 1882. Henry Clay Marchand was one of the most distinguished lawyers of the Westmoreland bar. He served as first sergeant in the Westmoreland Guards during the Mexican war, the company being recruited in Greensburg.
8. Thomas S., born December 3, 1821, graduated at Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, in 1843, and practiced in Greensburg until his death, August 2, 1848.
9. Elizabeth L., born July 5, 1824, died May 10, 1863.
