David's parents were William Lester and Mary Debusk. His father died in 1837 of smallpox and his mother and his two younger brothers James and Andrew left Washington County with her shortly after his death. Mary is said to have died in Oct 1846 but no record has been found. James and Andrew are living in Sangamon Illinois by the 1850 census.

David and Elizabeth remained in the Glade Spring area of Washington Co., VA until sometime after the 1860 census. In 1870 they can be found in Sangamon Illinois where several other members of the family had moved. Their only child born in Illinois was Martha who was nine years old on the 1870 census. David died in 1880 and his wife remained in the area where she can be found with her youngest children in 1900.
