14 Dr. David 5 Hunter (David 4 , David 3 , Hugh 2 , Andrew 1 ) was twice married. His first wife was Mercy, daughter of John Stuart Harrison, of Martinsburg, Virginia. They were married March 6, 1828. He married, second, Mrs. Rebecca Houston, daughter of Willoughby Washington and Mary Ann (Riddle) Lane, and widow of John Houston. (See Lane Family, Westmoreland" ranch, No. 4.) Doctor Hunter died in 1834. His widow, Rebecca (Lane) Hunter, died in Charlestown, West Virginia, April 2, 1895. The notice of her death is given below:
Death of a Venerable Lady. Mrs. Rebecca Hunter, widow of late Dr. David Hunter, died suddenly last night, about 12 o'clock, at her residence on Washington street. The cause of her death was exhaustion from old age. She was the oldest woman in Jefferson County, she was born September, 1801, in Strasburg, Pennsylania. She married first Mr. Houston of Mercersburg, Pennsylvania, who died two years after the marriage. About 1830 she married Dr. David Hunter and removed to Jefferson County, Virginia, where she has resided ever since. She was highly cultured and a leader in soiety. She was a woman of remarkable energy and physical vigor, and enjoyed good health all her life. She owned fine property in this place and a large country state. Her family consisted of three daughters, Mrs. ?. R. Riddle, child of first marriage, Mrs. Travers, wife of Hon. William H. Travers, a prominent lawyer of this place, and Mrs. Mary E. Strother, widow of General David H. Strother, who was known in literature as Porte Crayon." Doctor David Hunter was brother of the late Andrew Hunter, a distinguished lawyer.
