A distinguished lawyer who assisted in the prosecution of John Brown. Born in Berkeley County, Virginia to Colonel David H. and Elizabeth Pendleton Hunter. Attended Hampden-Sydney College, after graduating he studied law, first in Harpers Ferry but later moved to Charles Town to pratice. In 1840 he was a Whig Presidential elector and six years later he declined a nomination to Congress. In 1850 he served as a member of the Virginia Constitutional Convention. On October the 18th 1859, after the capture of John Brown at Harpers Ferry Governor Henry A. Wise met Hunter and engaged him to assist Charles B. Harding, the county's commonwealth attorney, in the prosecution of the raiders. Hunter performed this duty in a creditable and thorough manner. During the Civil War he was at times the trusted friend and adviser of General Robert E. Lee. On July 17, 1864, his home at Charles Town was ruthlessly destroyed by order of his first cousin, General David Hunter of the Union Army. Andrew was kept in custody for a month with no charges against him. After the war he was one of Virginia's lawyers in the suit to regain the seized counties of Jefferson and Berkeley. He and his family are buried in a family plot at Zion EP. Church. Ref. Millard K. Bushong, History of Jefferson County
