  1. David Freeman is widely known as the youngest soldier to be enlisted during the Civil War. He was only 10 years old when he enlisted (the youngest Union soldier was 12). He was allowed to enlist to assist his older brother, Jasper, who had enlisted but was ill. Jasper was killed a year later in the Battle of Manassas, VA, but David stayed in the army until the War was over in 1865.
    He attended Civil War Confederate Veteran reunions until his death.
