Sample appears on the records of Captain Smyth's Company of Partisan Rangers in Mississippi during the Confederate War. He was a private in Captain A. P. Hill's Company of Partisan Rangers "Volunteers" and is included in a muster roll of the organization for 29 July 1862 to 29 July 1862. He was mustered into service on 29 July 1862 at Ways Bluff, Madison Co., Mississippi by Captain A. Hillyer for a period of three years. According to his military records, he had brown hair, dark eyes, fair complexion and was 5 feet ll inches tall. He again appears on a company record of Smyth's Company from 30 June to 1 Nov 1863. The record says that he was enlisted 20 Jul 1863 at Ways Bluff by Hillyer for the period of the war. (This was a reenlistment - p.h.). He was last paid by Major Patton 1 Nov 1862. He was absent, on detached service, order General Smith, 7 April 1863. D. J. Sample also appears on the rolls of 2nd Company D, Wood's Regiment, Confederate Cavalry (lst Regiment, Mississippi Cavalry, Wirt Adam's Regiment Cavalry). Additional records show that he was a Private, Co. D., Wood's Regiment, Cavalry, residence, Canton, Madison County, Mississippi and appears on a roll of prisoners of war of Company D, Wood's Regiment, Cavalry, Adam's Brigade, Cavalry, Confederate States Army commanded by Colonel R. C. Wood, which was surrendered at Citronelle, Alabama, by Lieutenant General R. Taylor, CSA, to Major General E. R. S. Canby, USA, May 4, 1865. Roll is dated Gainsville, Alabama, May 12, 1865.
