Facts and Events
On the 1850 census in Marion Twp., Hocking Co., Oh., with parents. Listed as "David" from the handwriting. [p 57 fam #411/420] He married Margaret Ann ZELLER 7 Oct 1852 in Hocking County, Oh. [HVRM, Book "B", p.174] She was born about 1839 in Oh. We find Daniel on the 1870 Census, in Valley Twp, Polk Co., Ia. He is age 39, a farmer with $500 in personal estate. Wife Margaret is 31 and with them are 7 children; Sarah, 17; thru Margaret, 2. [p 107 fam #110/12)] By studying the children's births, we see that the family moved to Iowa between July 1868 and June 1870 when census places them in Polk Co., Ia. The 1880 census for Webster Twp., Grimes, Polk Co., Ia., shows us Daniel, 42, a farmer. His wife is Margaret, also 42, caring for the six children at home. This erroneously states that all children born in Ohio. [p 589 fam #262/266] The family story tells us that when early family reunions were formed, some of the Rittgers were upset when Roots showed up. They had lost contact and didn't know they had Root cousins! On the 1910 census, Margaret, a widow age 77, is listed in the home with daughter Margaret (Root) Briggs [144.8] in Grant's Pass City, Josephine Co., Ore. She declares she has born 11 children, 9 alive at this time. she is listed as a domestic servant. (ED 125, p. 17B, fam #329/348) We thank Wendy Watson for her contribution to this line. References
