Youth

"He was always a remarkable boy manifesting great kindness of heart toward all. Having no parents to guide him he was left to himself very much; he went to school it is true. The books were few in those days and were handed down from one child to the next. They did not satisfy him for while other boys played, he would be studying books taken from the library. He appeared to be older than he really was. He received the name among his comrades as "Judge"."

Adulthood

"He had many trials hard to bear up. He had eight children by his first wife, lost five sons in infancy, and his wife died in 1851, leaving twin boys six weeks of age. Then came the trial few men could stand. Financial losses occurred that he could not prevent at that time that added to his sorrows. When I look back at the kindness toward the children, his self-denial that others could be made comfortable, the daily provisions he made for those around him, and always cam in pleasantly, the little girls running after him, I think he must have had great power of endurance. His trials must have been great toward the latter part of his stay in Cincinnati." -The Record of the Chivvis Family p.7-8
