Obituary - Rev. C. T. Burgess Beloved Minister, Goes to Reward
Rev. C. T. Burgess for more than 50 years a Baptist minister of this section, died in Seneca, S. C., on Sunday, September 11, of cancer from which he had been ill for several years. He had reached the ripe age of 90 years and his death did not come as a surprise to his friends and family.
The body of Rev. Burgess was brought to Carnesville for funeral and interment at Cross Roads church on Tuesday, September 13th. In charge of the services were Rev. C. W. Henderson, assisted by Revs. E. H. Collins, of Winder, Revs. Garrett and Mitchell, of Seneca, S. C., interment following in the Cross Roads cemetery.
Rev. Burgess for more than fifty years preached in hundreds of churches in Franklin and adjoining counties and his friends are numbered by his acquaintances. He was a man of deep religious convictions, yet tolerant of the views of others and his ninety years of life on earth were marked by his constant devotion to the cause of christianity and his ever readiness to help everyone with whom he came in contact. His passing removes another of the grand old pioneer citizens and the memory of his life of service will remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
He was one of the last of the veterans of the War Between the States, having served his southland with gallantry and valor during the sixties. Born in Banks county, he had lived most of his life in Franklin county, moving to Seneca a few years ago to make his home with is daughter.
Rev. Burgess was twice married and 5 children survive the first union, Oscar Burgess, Mrs. Nettie Carithers, Danielsville, Mrs. Lelia Murk Gainesville, Mrs. Minnie Ayers, Carnesville, Mrs. Sallie Sartain, Courtney, S. C., and two children by his second wife, Doyle Burgess, Highlands, N. C. and Miss Blondine Burgess, Seneca, S. C.
