    ... Cortez Ewing, the next oldest practicing attorney at this bar was born on the 15th day of April, 1837 and entered the office of Henry H. Talbott, Clerk and ex officio Recorder, at the early age of thirteen, and filled the position of Deputy Clerk and Recorder from 1850 to 1857, From 1857 to 1858, he was a clerk in the General Land Office at Washington, D. C, under Thomas A. Hendricks, then Commissioner of the General Land Office. He was admitted to the bar in 1858, in the Decatur Circuit Court. In 1861-62, he was in the law office of Gavin & Hord, and, during the absence of Col. James Gavin in the army, he assisted O. B. Hord in completing the revision of the laws of Indiana, known as Gavin & Hordes Indiana Statutes. He became the law partner of Oscar B. Hord, and the firm of Hord & Ewing continued until about 1868. Since then, and until the present time, he has-been constantly engaged in the practice of the law. The only official position filled by him during this time was from 1874 to 1878. He was one of the Trustees of the Institute for the Education of the Blind. ...
