  3. Source:Hinds, Albert Henry. History and Genealogy of the Hinds Family, p. 31, which in general, is very confused and mostly relies on correspondents for its information, relates family tradition that "Corlis Hinds emigrated from England" but cannot prove this. So he suggests the name Corlis comes from the previous married name of his mother (i.e., not her maiden name?) This is probably the result of misidentifying the mother, though, to be fair, this appears to be caused by relying on NEHGR, Vol. 13, p. 212, an obituary whose title gives the maiden name of Whitaker despite no mention of that in the obituary. That name appears to come from an earlier report of the 1704 Indian attack that is mentioned in the obituary (NEHGR, Vol. 2, p. 353) where the girl is named Anna Whitaker.
Now, the probate of John Corliss of Haverhill (Essex Case 6350. Note that Haverhill mentioned as her residence during her youth in the obituary), shows that in 1708 an accounting is submitted by administratrix "Mary Corlis alias Witacker", and a share is paid to daughter Hannah, for whom no birth is found, but who is listed between Mary (b. 1687/88) and Timothy (b. 1693) (note: Thomas listed before Mary, his birth recorded 1689/90? one expects this is a transcribing error, using Anna/Hannah's date for Thomas, and that he was born around 1685/86, but the original records do not appear to be online, so this cannot be checked). Haverhill records show a Ann Corliss baptized in 1700 (her age at death suggests a birth about 1690), and John Hinds m. in Marlborough 1709 to Anna Corsise/Corliss (unlikely to be a second marriage at this young age). So the name Corlis appears to be her maiden name, William Whitaker being the name of her step-father (Haverhill VR, p. 2:330, m. wid. Mary Corly 28 Jan 1702-3).
