Marquette Men Killed in Action

Two Families Notified Of Deaths Last Week

Two Marquette soldiers have been killed in action recently, according to telegrams received by their parents. Pfc. Clyde R. Johnson lost his life in Germany March 1, 1945, and Pfc. Glenn Knapp was killed in action Feb. 24 on Corregidor.

Private Johnson was a member of a regimental medical department and had been overseas since December 1942. He saw action in Africa, Sicily, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Johnson of Marquette.

Private Knapp, son of Arthur Knapp of Marquette, was a paratrooper with the 503rd Infantry. He saw service at Guam and Leyte, previous to the Corregidor action.


Clyde Johnson Rites At Monona Thursday

McGregor - Services for Pfc. Clyde Johnson, son of Mrs. Kate Johnson of McGregor, will be held Thursday at the Schultz funeral home in Monona. Pfc. Johnson was killed March 1, 1945, in action in Germany. He enlisted in the army July 3, 1942, at Marquette and served in Africa, Sicily, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He was wounded July 20, 1944, in France and sent to England for hospitalization. He was awarded the Silver Star, the Purple Heart and a citation for devotion to duty. In addition to his mother, Pfc. Johnson is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Merle Wilbur of Minneapolis and Mrs. Nels Rierson of Chicago, and a brother, John, also of Chicago. They will attend the funeral in Monona, where the soldier's father is buried.
