The funeral services were conducted b Rev J. C. Wortley on Wednesday. The remains were interred in the cemetery on the farm, opposite th German Church. Mrs Phelps was the daughter of Amos and Elizabeth Newman of Enosburg, VT. She was married June 17, 1807. Soon after the marriage, they settled in Covington, (Wyoming Co) NY. In 1828, they came to Michigan and settled in the town of Dexter. A few families preceded them, among which were Mr. Warner's and Mr Carr's. The site this village was almost a wilderness, and grain must go to Detroit to be ground. Two events occurred in 1864, which make that year memorable in the family record. One was the death of Mr.Phelps, the other, the uniting of Mrs. Phelps and several other of the family with the M. E. Church. It is said that family representatives of four generations were in the happy group that united with the church that day. The name and ministry of Rev. D. C. Jacobs, have been held dear in that family since. Although unable to attend religious worship during several years past, owing to difficulty hearing, her interest in religion was unabated,--being especially manifested during the last few weeks. As an instance, she said to a loved relative "are you still living your religion?" There are many thinggs in such a long and beautiful life, which surviving loved ones cannot let die. Both affection and memory and religious faith and hope will make her social and Christian virtues as beautiful as lilies and as fragrant as precious incense. Children of three generations can call her blessed. The first generation of early settlers is passing away. The words which we have heard so often, "When I first came into this country it was so and so," will be changed. The second generatio will say, "father and mother said so" God grant that the remaining pioneers who sought this country and found a home in it, may also seek and find a better one, that is an heavenly and settle at last in a city that hath foundation, whose maker and builder is God.
