Take a right and go down that road past the old country school house that is on the right. A little farther there is a road that goes off to the right again and up a hill to Fairmont CHURCH that is where the cemetery is on top of the hill. Biography courtesy of Ron WrightPLANTS --- MARSHALL CO.The Plants' being of German decent, came to Marshall County fro East Finley, Washington County, Pennsylvania area. They were one of the oldest and most prominent families in the East Finley area. Records show that Leonhardt Plantz came over on the Sip Fane in 1749 fro Germany. His son, Christian, who married Catherine Haines, settled in the East Finley area, where there was a village by the name of "Plants" in the early 1800's. The "Plants Covered Bridge", across temple Fork of Wheeling Creek, is listed in the National Registar of Historic Places. The land where Fairmount United Brethern Church and cemetery is located was donated by George Plants, who was a school master in 1850. The Plants' were mostly farmers with several stone masons, who helped build the National Road.Christian and Catherine had thirteen children. Christian and one of his sons Leonard, fought in the Revolutionary War. Solomon, another son, married Keziah Farabee and was the father of William Jasper Plants. William Jasper married Martha Jane King and lived in the Golden area of Marshall County. To this union Solomon Ellsworth (Ell), Keziah Jane and Sarah Katherine were born. Martha Jane died shortly after the birth of sarah Katherine and William later married Fannie Jane Sampson and they has six children.Ell and Cora Dowler, his wife, lived on Burch's Run near Pine Hill. Ell was a farmer as most of the Plants' had been. Ell and Cora had eleven children, John William being the oldest.John married Mary Hummel in 1910 and they reared five children - Walter Wm., Ervin, Elsie, Clyde and Russell Everett. John, also a farmer, lived on Little Creek and Pine Hill. Christian Plants arrived in Philadelphia from Rotterdam aboard the ship Fame in August 17, 1749. One of the oldest and most prominent family of E. Finley Township in PA. Native of Eastern Penna. Settled Washington Co. about 1796. Move to Finley in 1806. Christian Plants was a veteran of the American Revolution. An arrangement was made a few years ago by Margaret Petroskas of Swarthmore, PA. who was one of his many descendants, to have the D.A.R. place a bronze marker designating his service on Christian's grave. In 1796 they moved to Washington County, PA. locating at the foot of Gallow Hill near the settlement of Washington. Ten years later they relocated to Finley (later known as East Finley) Township on what would become known as the Enlow Fork of Wheeling Creek. He farmed during summer, having cleared a site among the forests of black oak, elm, and hickory. He taught school duing winter and they are known as one of the oldest and most prominent families of East Finley Township. Will of Christian Plants: Decd. In the name of God Amen. I Christian Plants of Washington County, Finley Township and State of Pennsylvania being sick and and weak of body but of sound mind memory and understanding; praised be God for it and considering the certainty of death and the uncertainty of the time thereof and to the end, I may be better prepared to leave this world whenever it shall please God to call me to hence do therefore make and declare this my last Will and Testament in manner following, that is to say First and principally of all I commend my soul into the hands of Almighty God my creator hoping for free pardon and remission of all my sins and to enjoy everlasting happiness in the heavenly kingdom through Jesus Christ my Savior, my body I commit to the earth to be buried in decent Christian burial at the discretion of surviveing executors here in after mentioned. First It is my Will and meaning that all my just debts and funeral charges be paid out of my personal estate by myexecutors. Secondly, I give and bequeath to well beloved wife Catherin Plants all my real and personal estate now owned and possessed by me during her widowhood on condition that she shall raise up and give reasonable schooling my four youngest children that is to say Catherine Plants, Mary Plants, John Plants Jr. and Maxwell Plants the boys to the age of twenty-one and my girls to the age of eighteen years and if any further issue in the manner. Thirdly, It is my Will that my son Solomon Plants shall have the use of my small plantation on the ridge until the first of Aprin next and no longer, then it shall come into the hands of my Executors for the benefit of raising my aforesaid children, Fourthly, it is my Will, that my two sons Christian Plants and Jacob Plants that they stay at home and work the place and help raise my aforesaid children that my wife shall give to each of them a horse saddle and bridle worth fifty dollars if they are obedient to her until they arrive at the age of twenty-one years. Fifthly, It is my Will and I give and bequeath to my well beloved daughter Elizabet Plants for her tender affection to me now the sum of fifteen dollars to be paid to her in one year from this out of money that is owen to me. It is my will and meaning that my aforesaid children be raised out of the profits of my real and personal estate now owned by me, and further my meaning is that my well beloved wife shall have the use of the whole during her life but if it should happened that my wife shall die before my youngest comes of age then it is my will that all my real and personal estate be sold and equally divided amongst all my children share and share alike and if any of my now children should die before that time leave no heir then and in that case it shall be divided amongst the survivors of them share and share alike and further I make and ordain and appoint Leonard Plants and my Wife Catherine Plants & Henry Enlow as executors of this my last will and testament as witness my hands and seal this twenty-third day of March in the year of our Lord one Thousand eight hundred and twenty-three.
