Occupation: He carried the two Indianapolis newspapers and the Chicago Examiner as a boy in Jamestown, Boone, IN. 1906 to 1913 was a telegraph operator for the Peoria and Easern Railroad (New York Central R. R.) and railroad station agent, Linnsburg, IN and Pittsboro, IN. 1913 purchased a furniture store and undertaking business in Pittsboro, IN. He was associated with an uncle in the heating business and operated a weekly newpaper under contract with the Brownsburg, IN Record. He sold the businesses in 1920. 1920 to Muncie, IN, worked for Banner Whitehill Furniture then to Indianapolis, IN store of Banner Whitehill in January of 1921. 1922 purchased a substantial interest in the W. H. Messenger Store, Delaware and Washington Streets (201 East Washington St., Indianapolis, IN). He owned the store by January, 1927. He later added 3 branches and an upholstered furniture manufacturing plant. 1931 formed Hicks Furniture Mart, a wholesale furniture business, at 311 E. Washington St., Indianapolis, Marion, IN. He retired from the business in 1958, having sold it to his son-in-law, Archer C. Shirley. Salesman for Howell Furniture Co.
