Charles' death certificate lists his parents as William Swartout, born New York and Caroline Beck, born in Michigan. For the 1880 census, his family was living two doors away from Joseph Keeler, Jr. in Alaiedon Twp.

Death Summons C.E. Swartout Charles Edward Swartout, 87, father of county health officer Dr. Hubert L. Swartout of Arroyo Grande, died yesterday afternoon at his son's home, 1300 Grand avenue.

A resident here for seven years and formerly of Los Angeles, Mr. Swartout was a retired farmer. He was born in Michigan on Feb. 6, 1866.

Survivors include his son, a daughter, Mrs. Florene Smith of Arroyo Grande, four grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Adventist funeral services were conducted today at 10:30 a.m., in the Wood funeral chapel. Elder Leonard Allen officiated and interment was made in Arroyo Grande's district cemetery.
