Charles A. Pattison Victim of Hit and Run

Charles Pattison was killed by hit and run driver before 7 AM near relay station of ATTC. He was employed as a carpenter for Gilfillan Lumber Company. He was walking to work when killed. Charles was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church.

New Castle News, New Castle, Lawrence Co, PA, 12 Feb 1935, p2 CA Pattison was the son of the late David C and Elizabeth Jane Pattison and was born 10 Oct 1850. He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church and was a devout and active member of the congregation. He is survived by his wife Myra Morrison Pattison; one son Roy E Pattison of Philadelphia and 2 daughters, Mary M Pattison at home and Mrs. Floyd V. Lortz of this city; one grandson Billy Lortz. One son David preceded him in death. Funeral arrangements will be announced later. Mr. Pattison was a highly respected member of the community and the manner of his death was a great shock to his many friends.

New Castle News, New Castle, Lawrence Co, PA, 13 Feb 1935 Identity of the driver whose auto struck and killed Charles A. Pattison, aged 75, of RFD No 2, near the relay station of the AT and T Company on Youngstown Road early yesterday morning was made known late last evening when George Fox, aged 22, of 205 Bluff St came into the State Highway Patrol Station on Grant St and gave himself up, admitting that the truck which he was driving had caused the aged man’s fatal injuries. He was accompanied to police station by Robert M. Wilson who owned the truck. Fox was employed by Wilson in hauling milk, secured from farmers west of the city into New Castle. Fox was unaware of Pattison’s presence on the highway until after he had struck him. He left the scene of the accident becoming panic-stricken.

NCN, 18 Feb 1935, p11 An inquest was held during the evening of the 18th to determine more information about the truck striking CA Pattison by George Fox.

NCN, 19 Feb 1935 John Pattison was one of the first witnesses to scene of accident but was unable to recognize his cousin, CA Pattison; inquest verdict stated that George Fox had been up late the night before and had consumed 3 bottles of beer. He was charged with leaving the scene of an accident; failure to stop and render assistance required a $600 bail and he was to await action of March Grand Jury. Later Fox was tried for manslaughter but was only found guilty of failing to stop and was paroled. there were no eye witnesses to the accident.
