Charles enlisted April 21, 1861, nine days after the shots fired at Fort Sumter. He joined company A of the Indiana 8th Infantry Regiment. He mustered out August 6, 1861 at Indianapolis. He appears to have stayed out for a few months, but fatefully reenlisted in 1862. He joined the 19th Independent Battery of the Indiana Light Artillery which was formed in August 1862 and was known as Harris' Battery. Their first engagement was Charles' last, the Battle of Perryville on October 8th. He may have been wounded early in the battle in Donelson's attack on the center of the Union line of which Harris' battery was a part. He died of his wounds a week later. It is not clear whether he knew that his brother-in-law Hiram R. Minor was fighting in the same battle. His place of burial is being researched. He was, fortunately for his parents, the only one of five soldier sons, a son-in-law, and a grandson to die in the war.
