- ↑ "The death of Mr. Charles William Gerke occurred at his home at 15 Suttenfield street at 5:30 o'clock yesterday morning. Mr. Gerke was one of the best known young men in Fort Wayne and during his last illness which has lasted nearly a year, the inquiries concerning his condition have been frequent from hundreds of friends. The cause of death was consumption. Mr. Gerke has been assistant secretary and treasurer of the Consolidated Street Car company, and in his connection with that concern he has had much to do for the public of Fort Wayne, and always did it courteously and efficiently. For the past few days Mr. Gerke had been getting steadily worse and his friends became convinced that the end was near. He became delirious and seemed not to recognize those about him. Charles William Gerke was born in Fayette county, Ill, November 8, 1868, and was, therefore, less than twenty-nine years of age. With his parents he came to Fort Wayne when a little boy. He was bright and industrious and seventeen years ago accepted a position in the office of the Fort Wayne street railway. He became conversant with the affairs of the road and several years ago was chosen as its assistant secretary and treasurer, which position he held until his death. Several years ago Mr. Gerke was married to Anna Etzold, who died five years ago today. In April, 1896, Mr. Gerke was again married to Miss Emma Dittman, of Jackson, Mich., who, with her fifteen -month-old baby, survives him. About one year ago Mr. Gerke's health began to fail and he went to Asheville, N.C., last November. He improved in health and early this spring returned to Fort Wayne. Mrs. Christina Gerke, mother of deceased, lives on Gay street, the father having been killed by lightning about fourteen years ago. The following brothers and sisters also survive: Mrs. Charles Prange, Mrs. John Langen, Misses Sophia and Tillie Gerke and Louis and Ernest Gerke. The funeral will probably occur Tuesday afternoon from Zion's Lutheran church."
