1861 - With mother at 188 Park Lane, Macclesfield. Aged 15, silk winder.

Abt 1861 - Family tradition has it that Charles ran away from home and went to sea when he was 15. He does not appear on the 1871 census.

1868 - Recorded as crew on the ship "John Wesley", sailing from South Sea Islands to Sydney, NSW, on 4 March 1868. Station recorded as ordinary seaman, aged 20, of Macclesfield.

1876 - Recorded as crew on "Hero" sailing from Auckland to Sydney on 2 June 1876. Recorded as Able-bodied Seaman, English, aged 28.

1877 - Recorded as crew on "Hero" , sailing from Auckland to Sydney on 15 May 1877. Recorded as Able-bodied Seaman, English, aged 28.

1893 - Certificate of discharge from ship "Aramac" records Charles as being aged 47, of Cheshire, able seaman. Date of engagement was 21 July 1893 and date of discharge 24 October 1893.

1902 - Recorded on Son William's birth registration as a Wharf Labourer, aged 52, born at London, England.

1930 - Recorded in Australian Electoral Roll as Charles FODEN, 57 St Thomas St, Coogee, no occupation [with wife and two sons], and also at 11 Hough St, Waverley.
