Charles Edwards was baptised on 17th October 1824 at Pagham in Sussex, son of Charlotte Edwards, formerly Gilbert, and her husband William Edwards, an agricultural labourer. He was the elder of their two children. In 1828, when Charles was three years old his mother died. His father remarried eight months later, with an Eliza Horner becoming Charles's stepmother. Charles's younger brother died in 1831 aged three, leaving Charles effectively an only child.

Charles appears in the 1841 census working as an agricultural labourer for a yeoman in the nearby village of Merston.

Charles was married in 1849 to a Rebecca Jane Upfold who was from London. They appear together in Chichester in the 1851 census living on The Hornet, the street just outside the city walls leading eastwards. Charles was working as a bootmaker. Charles and Rebecca went on to have two daughters in 1853 and 1855, both named Lydia Cecilia. Both died young. Neither Charles nor Rebecca have been traced after the death of their second daughter in 1855.
