Facts and Events
Charlotte Gilbert was baptised on 22nd January 1804 at Horsham in Sussex. She was the daughter of Charlotte Gilbert, formerly Morgan, and her husband John Gilbert, a hatter. Charlotte's parents had married in 1803 in Chichester. They stayed in Horsham for a little while after Charlotte was born, having another daughter baptised there in 1805, but by 1806 they had returned to Chichester, having other children baptised there from 1806 onwards.
On 29th October 1823, aged 19, Charlotte was married at St Pancras Church in Chichester to an agricultural labourer named William Edwards. According to their marriage licence Charlotte had been living in the parish of Chichester St Pancras for four weeks and married with the consent of her father. William was from Pagham, a coastal parish a few miles south of Chichester. After their marriage they settled in Pagham, having two sons baptised there in 1824 and 1827.
Charlotte died aged 24, just three months after her second son was baptised. She was buried at Pagham on 26th February 1828. William survived her by 25 years and remarried eight months after her death.

This baptism has been linked to the Charlotte Gilbert who married William Edwards on the basis that her marriage licence refers to her father being John Gilbert, a hatter. A John Gilbert described as a hatter and his wife Charlotte had a son called John baptised in the parish of St Peter the Great in Chichester on 31st December 1813. John Gilbert and Charlotte Morgan had married at St Peter the Great in Chichester on 12th April 1803, with John described as being of the parish of Horsham at that time. Looking at the sequence of baptisms of children of John and Charlotte Gilbert, there were two baptisms at Horsham - this Charlotte in 1804 and a Maria in 1805, after which there are no further baptisms in Horsham, but from 1806 they had further children baptised in Chichester.
