Richard Cull Jr., who joined the Dayton Daily News as a teen-age reporter and went on to become chief of Cox Newspapers' Washington bureau, died Friday. He was 77.
Mr. Cull was stricken by cancer several months ago. He died in Jacksonville, Fla. A Dayton native, Mr. Cull went to work for the Daily News in the early 1930s as a Chaminade High School student.
Mr. Cull's father, Richard Cull Sr., also worked at the Daily News and was managing editor when he left in 1935 to organize the news department at WHIO, then a fledgling radio station. He died in 1947.
Richard Cull Jr. moved to the Daily News' Columbus bureau in 1946 and a year later became the paper's Washington correspondent. In 1961, he was named Washington bureau chief for Cox Newspapers. Cox Enterprises publishes the Daily News.
Mr. Cull is survived by his sisters, Janet Christensen of Florida and Eileen Meisner of Cincinnati, and their families. His sister Marjorie Finney resides in Dayton.
He was buried Tuesday at Calvary Cemetery after a private service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Hotel for the homeless in Dayton.
