Charles H. Conkling, son of Henry and Harriet (Martin) Conkling was born in November, 1852 in Indiana. In 1874, Charles married Jennie A. Hynds daughter of Judge Patrick and Honora Hynds in Morris, Illinois. Jennie was born in Illinois in February, 1853. Charles worked in several enterprises with his father and eventually ended up in banking and finance in Joliet, Illinois where the family lived for many years. Charles added a “g” onto his name perhaps to show a connection with Roscoe Conkling. The Genealogical and Biographical History of Will County (Illinois) published in 1900 says that Charles is a descendant of the brother of Roscoe Conkling’s ancestor. A Will County, Illinois deed show Jennie A. Conkling of Joliet and her husband Charles H Conkling of Oklahoma County, Oklahoma sold land for $5 to Sarah Loughran on 15 March 1913. Apparently Charles lived in Oklahoma for awhile. Neither Charles nor Jennie appear in the 1920 census for Illinois or Oklahoma. Jennie died in 1924 and is buried at Mt. Carmel Catholic cemetery in Morris (Grundy County), Illinois. Charles was still living at the time of Jennie’s death.
