BIRTH! He was born in Yates Co. N.Y., 29 Jan 1824. Lived there until 1870 when he packed up his family and his father Jared age 90, and traveled by covered wagon to Iowa. His youngest daughter Mary was born there 1871. His other 6 children were born in N.Y. The 1870 Iowa census lists Charles and new wife Alma as having a real estate value of $4000 and a personal property value of $8000. Daughter Emma 21, and Mary age 5, died in 1876 at the same time of a flu epidemic. O'bera Moore, his first wife must have died shorthly after they arived in Iowa. Walter Calhoun, a grand nephew of Charles, remembered Charles as one of the most affluent of the Calhouns in that area, but he had a reputation of being stingy. Walter said that the family gossip was that Charles considered himseflf quite a ladies man, that he was always fastidious in dress and wore a toupe to conceal his baldness. He was a farmer. He was the one that changed the name from Cahoon to Calhoun.
