About Charles Butt, Jr.
CHARLES BUTT JR., son of CHARLES BUTT SR. and MARY VAN STONE, was born on 29 Sep 1888 in at Goderich, Huron County, Ontario, Canada. Charles grew up in a large family. There were five girls and three boys. He was the youngest child. The family emigrated from Canada to Bay City, Michigan in 1890 when Charles was a toddler.S4,S9
Hyde/Butt Family records list his birthplace as Goderich, Ontario, Canada. The 1910 and 1920 census lists him as Canadian with an immigration date of 1890. His WWI Draft registration lists him as being born in Goderich. However, the 1894 Michigan State Census, the marriage application of daughter Olive ButtS3, and his death certificate lists his birthplace as Bay City MI. A birth certificate would be the final proof. Earlier records filled out by the person are stronger than later records filled out by others so the strongest evidence points to his being born in Goderich.
He was born in Canada and grew up in Michigan, but he married LILLIE BELLE PARKE, daughter of ZENITH ARTHUR (ARTHUR) PARKE and OLIVE LULU LOCKWOOD, in 1909S4 in Chicago. He was 20. It is unclear how he got to Chicago. He would live the rest of his life there. Just after they married, he and LILLIE BELLE PARKE appeared on the census of 1910 at 4636 Vincennes Avenue, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. They lived as lodgers in the same apartment building as Lillie's grandmother Francelia Brown Lockwood and her Aunt, Francelia's daughter Helen Lockwood. Charles and Lillie were the parents of eight children, five sons and three daughters.
Charles held various occupations during his life. He was a driver for a store in 1910, worked as a motorman for street cars in 1920, was a clerk in a billiard hall in 1930, and was later a house painter.
Some of the places Charles lived over the years include:
- 1889 - born in Goderich, Ontario
- 1890 - emigrated to Bay City, Michigan
- 1910 - 4636 Vincennes Avenue, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.
- 1917 - He lived on 6 May 1917 at 1654 Burns, Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. The Detroit address is from Charles WWI Draft Registration card. It is very curious. Charles was raised in Bay City Michigan, but all residence data from 1910 on has him in Chicago. His daughter Olive is born in Chicago six months later. Charles was a motorman, so perhaps he regularly traveled between Detroit and Chicago as part of his job.
- 1920 - 9238 Woodland Avenue, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois
- 1930 - 834 E 88th St, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. He was a clerk in a billiard hall in 1930.
- 1947 - 735 E 88th Place, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. This was formerly the home of Lillie's parents. It's the house she grew up in.
Charles became a widower in 1947 when his wife Lillie died from complications of Diabetes. He was 58. He died seven years later of a Heart Attack on 7 Apr 1954 at Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, at age 65. He was buried in Cedar Park Cemetery, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.
