CAROLINE BUTT was born on 6 Jul 1887 at Ontario, Canada. Her family emigrated from Canada to the US in 1890, when she was three. Brother Charles listed 1890 as the year he entered the US.

The Van Stone family had a history of Huntington's chorea (see The Van Stone Family Curse). Caroline's mother Mary was diagnosed choreic in 1893, at age 35. Mary's illness likely had an extremely negative effect on youngest daughter Caroline. This lead to family scandal as described in The Importance of Being Ernest. Father Charles did not come off as a sympathetic figure throughout this.

Caroline's troubles were not yet over. She gave birth to a second illegitimate child, daughter Ruth. Ruth's father is unknown. She was adopted by Caroline's uncle Thomas Van Stone.S6.

Thankfully, Caroline's life quieted down and she married CARL MURPHY in 1906. Carl and Caroline had no children.

CAROLINE died on 3 Jul 1935 at Bay City, Bay County, Michigan, at age 47.S5 She died from Choleystitis Lethiasis (Gall Bladder infection). She was buried in Elm Lawn Cemetery
