PERSONAL-Charles H. Britton, son of Police Justice Britton, has been Private Secretary of Superintendent J. S. Buckelew, ever since he was placed in charge of the Amboy Division, some five years ago. It gives us pleasure to note the commendable record the gentleman mentioned has made for himself. He has had the sense of turning a good education to the best account, and by his intelligent and loyal service to his chief has rendered his services so indispensable that the superientendent terms him his "body guard." The example is one that deserves mention, nonetheless because what we have said is based entirely upon the testimony of numerous "outside parties," who have the opportunity of knowing the truth whereof they affirm.

OBIT NEWS:http://www.genealogybank.com/gbnk/newspapers/doc/ 1884-04-17; Bridgeton Evening News SUICIDE IN CAMDEN Chas. Britton Drowns Himself Intemperate Habits and Estragement from his Wife the Cause. CAMDEN, April 17, - The body of Charles H. Britton, aged 30 years, residing at 620 North Fifth Street, Camden, was yesterday found floating in the Delaware River, opposite South street wharf. Britton was, up to two years ago, employed by Superintendent Buckalew, of the Amboy Division. He was a man of intemperate habits, and had been estranged from his wife and small son for some time. In his possession was found a long letter headed "Death Notice" and bearing the date of March 19th last, about which time he disappeared. In this letter he states that liquor was the primary cause of his troubles; that malicously inclined persons had turned the affections of his wife against him; deplored the fact that he was unable to see his wife and child before he took the final leap into eternity, and cautions his son to beware of whisky. In conclusion he thanks Bart Bonsallo, of the Camden Post, and Dick Justice for favors received at their hands.

OBITUARY:http://www.genealogybank.com/gbnk/newspapers/doc/ 1884-04-24, Trenton Evening Times, p. 6 CHARLES BRITTON DEAD A Man Well Known in Trenton Drowns Himself. PHILADELPHIA, April 17.

The crew of the police tug Stokely saw the body of a man floating down the Delaware past the Walnut street wharf yesterday morning. A boat was put out and the corpse was towed in and tied up to the Reading Company's wharf, at Lombard street. The face was so badly decomposed as to be unrecognizable. The clothes were smeared and the pockets filled with the mud of the river bottom. In an inner pocket was a pad of memorandum paper, headed: "Death Notes, March 19, 1884." Twelve small pages were filled with the minute writing.
The notes began: "Lies of a scurrilous nature have been circulated to my detriment." The suicide goes on to tell about a separation from his wife, who "might have made a better man" of him. He says that but for his mother and son he would have killed himself long ago, and blames his death to liquor. "Keep my son from rum," he says, "and train him up to be moral and useful." The writer thanks Mart Bonsall and Dick Justice, of Camden, for lending him a helping hand. The notes were signed "C.H. Britton."
Britton, whose first name if Charles, was about 30 years old, and has been missing from his home at 630 North Fifth street, Camden, for nearly a month. He was private secretary for Josias Buckalew, Superintendent of the Amboy division of the New Jersey Central, until a year and a half ago, when he was discharged, He has since been poor and despondent. Letters from officials of the Baltimore and Ohio and Princeton railroads, regretting their inability to give him work were found with the "Death Notes."
{Mr. Britton was well known in this city. He formerly resided here, and is the son of ex-Police Justice George Britton. - Ed.]
